Hmmm… so who’s idea was it to do a weekly blog? ‘Cos last week I was in France. Not being a landlady at all, but mostly eating crêpes. So sorry if this sounds a bit like ‘this is what I did on my holiday’, but this is what I did on my holiday…
Running a pub, well 2 pubs and a brewery, means never having a day off. Not unless we leave the county, or preferably the country. So that is what we did.
We procured a cheap deal from one of the papers, 4 nights at a Eurocamp in Brittany, with the ferry crossing from Dover to Calais. I can’t say I ever particularly yearn to go to France (except Paris, you can whisk me off there any day you like), but the deal was good, with a caravan in the grounds of a Chateau, and not too far to travel. Ahem.
Seven and a half hours from Calais, travelling mostly non-tolled roads (it’ll be fine, said KK, no need to spend more than we have to) we reached our destination. Well not quite. Google Maps decided to send us to a farmhouse about five miles away from the camp site, but we’re over that now (almost).
Our site was nestled mid-way between Mont St Michel and St Malo, set in acres of woodland and with enough swimming pools to keep the kids happy (three). And it was really was lovely, red squirrels greeted us daily (well, they didn’t say hello but they didn’t run away from us either), tree houses adorned the treetops in the nearby woods and there was a bbq in situ on our deck. Not bad at all.
Of course we had to visit France’s 2nd most popular tourist attraction (still trying to work out what the 1st is) – Mont St Michel. Quite amazing, an Abbey sat at the top of a rocky island surrounded by a maze of medieval streets and buildings, like a Disney set for real! We loved it, the kids tolerated it, we eat crêpes, so not a bad out come.
After 4 days of relaxation, numerous Biers de Bretagne (bit malty for me but KK happily had my share), a kid’s film every night, and a little bit of much needed sunshine, we headed home. The quick way. The 25 Euros more expensive way. The only 4.5 hours way. In fact, we did it…myyyyy waaaaaaaay…
